CAN YOU SLEEP WITH HOOP EARRINGS?
It's a free world, you can do as you please! 😁 That said, when your ears start to hurt and get irritated, you’ll want to come back here to read about why we don’t recommend it. Not only hoop earrings, any earrings for that matter. We’re going to get into the details a little later on, but let’s start from the beginning.
You’ve recently just pierced your ears. Additional points if you played it safe and got it done by a sterilized needle rather than a piercing gun to reduce the risk of nickel infection. Good job! You look even prettier than ever!
Is It Okay To Sleep with Hoop Earrings?
If your piercings are new, then you will need to keep your studs in for about six weeks or until your ears are completely healed. Otherwise the hole will close up and forcing your earrings into it then, may cause bleeding or infection.
First things first, when you pierce your ears, it is recommended that you wait at least six months before wearing hoops and dangling earrings.
Aly from Nevada asks,
“I know that six months is the general rule of thumb for it to be safe to wear hoops. But, my skin heals really first and I’m itching to try out these stunning hoops my husband got me for our anniversary. I got my ears pierced two months ago and my ears feel pretty healed. Is it okay if I just wear my hoops for a couple of days?”
Some people say that there are hoops with a smaller diameter that would be considered safe to sleep in. But honestly, why risk it? Let’s dive a little deeper by making a list of things that could possibly happen when you sleep with your hoop earrings.
- You risk tearing your ear. Yes, earlobe rupture is a thing! As you toss and turn in your sleep, the earrings could snag on your bedding or your hair, resulting in a torn or bruised earlobe.
- Your ears could get infected. Bruised skin automatically exposes the skin to bacteria and infection. The ear is a very delicate and sensitive organ and any small bruise if not properly handled can be catastrophic.
- If not for anything else, don’t do it because they can be quite uncomfortable to sleep in. Why disturb your peaceful sleep? Really, why?
Just imagine not being able to sleep after a long day of work because your hoop earrings keep getting stuck on your sheets, your pillow or your hair. Oh the frustration!
That said, some people argue that very small hoops are acceptable to sleep in.
Martha from Iowa says,
“I have had small thin hoops in my lobe piercings for the past three years. I sleep on them every night and I have never had a problem with it. The worst that could happen is that you’ll be uncomfortable. Do what makes you happy, I guess.”
So, with many schools of thought on the Internet, the best thing you can do for yourself is to consult a professional for advice.
As a parting shot, if you MUST sleep with hoop earrings on, make sure that they are really small. Small enough to avoid snagging on anything. You could also sleep with your hair up or in a bonnet to reduce the risk of snag.
