A finish describes the surface, not necessarily the metal throughout. Ask for the coating or treatment, underlying alloy, coverage, care limits, and what normal wear may reveal.

Construction boundary
Rhodium, gold or silver coatings, patinas, textures, lacquers, and other finishes can cover another alloy. Color alone does not reveal chemistry, thickness, coverage, or metal through the full section.
Questions for any finished surface
What is underneath?
Ask for the base alloy, intermediate layers, solder, repaired areas, and every skin-contact component.
What is at the surface?
Ask whether the layer is rhodium, another precious-metal coating, patina, texture, lacquer, or a different treatment.
How is wear handled?
Ask what normal wear can reveal, which care is excluded, and whether refinishing changes detail or dimensions.
Read a finish disclosure
- 1 — Separate base and surface
Write the underlying alloy and each coating or treatment as different fields.
- 2 — Map coverage
Confirm significant surfaces, recesses, posts, backs, clasps, solder, and deliberately uncoated areas.
- 3 — Record care and wear
Note excluded cleaners, friction points, expected appearance changes, and whether there is any evidence-bound service interval.
- 4 — Test in layers
When composition matters, tell the verifier about plating and request multiple observations rather than one surface reading.
Surface-finish questions
Does a white surface prove platinum or white gold?
No. Rhodium and other finishes can make different underlying metals look similar.
How long will a coating last?
There is no universal interval. Thickness, coverage, friction, use, care, construction, and desired appearance differ.
Can XRF always see through plating?
No single surface reading proves through-composition; layered construction can require microscopy and multiple test areas.
