Review one diamond without a blanket rule

  1. 1 — Start with the report

    Confirm the laboratory, report date, fluorescence intensity, and any stated color of the response.

  2. 2 — Use more than one light

    View the diamond in ordinary indoor light and daylight-like conditions instead of judging from UV imagery alone.

  3. 3 — Compare the actual stone

    Look for any appearance difference that matters to the wearer without projecting a population statistic onto the individual diamond.

Scope

GIA's observer findings do not justify a universal appearance promise. Fluorescence also cannot authenticate a natural diamond or establish a price, investment case, or treatment history.

Fluorescence questions

Does fluorescence continue after UV light is removed?

The fluorescence described here is visible while the diamond is exposed to the ultraviolet source; persistent afterglow is a different observation.

Does fluorescence prove a diamond is natural?

No. Presence, absence, color, or pattern is not a safe do-it-yourself origin test.
